Chafua Sanity

During this rainy season chafuas poor drainage systems have been exposed again .

As it is a norm during this periods the place is flooded and yet students have no option but visit the area where they enjoy their meals.

This situation poses several health effects if the university administration does not move fast to salvage the situations as witnessed in the past.

Breakfast is served

A breakfast combo with carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins

My mother insists on us having breakfast because it is one of the most essential meals for everyone. She says it is the key to a bright and active day.It provides the energy for the body to go through the day. It has to contain carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins.

In the carbohydrates, if it is wheat products, one is advised to use whole grain meal alternatives because they are healthier; for example, Weetabix, cornflakes, oatmeal, brown bread and whole grain muffins among others. Other alternatives may include white bread with peanut butter, toasted bread, boiled cassava or potatoes, maize or corn among others. Carbohydrates are the best source of long lasting energy because they are high in fibre and are broken down slowly in the body.

When it comes to proteins, one can decide to do animal or plant proteins. The animal proteins include lean meat, eggs, milk and cheese among others. Plant proteins include groundnuts, beans, lentils, peanuts among others. They are important because they help you feel full and also help reduce the unusual appetite and therefore reduce over eating.

Fruits are important before or after every meal. Some of the fruits one can use for breakfast include avocados, bananas, apples, oranges, berries and watermelon among others. It is important to have a fruit incorporated into your breakfast because they are a good source of vitamins, potassium and fibre.

Let self-love allow you to eat the proper breakfast.

Kienyeji; yes or no?

Assortment of tubers used in most African homes

When it comes to choosing a meal, a good percentage of youths would rather eat modern dishes and not the traditional African dishes. To them, the idea of eating African dishes is old school and they would rather indulge in modern dishes or rather western dishes. 95.6 per cent of the people who took a survey I conducted agree that Traditional African dishes are way healthier compared to the modern or western dishes.4.4 per cent had a contrary opinion and said the modern dishes were healthier.

When asked which traditional greens they prefer eating,31.1 per cent opted for terere and  28.9 per cent of the people say they would go for pumpkin leaves, 22.2 per cent would rather eat kunde while 17.8 per cent say mrenda is their favorite.

When it comes to eating traditional African dishes, 40 per cent say they eat the traditional African dishes weekly, 28.8 per cent say they eat the African dishes once in a while, 22.2 per cent say they eat African dishes everyday 6.7 say they never eat African dishes while 2.2 per cent eat the dishes monthly.

It is therefore evident that a large percent still eat and stick to African traditional dishes be it for breakfast, lunch or supper.

audio interview with Time Karimi

There are nutrients that are present in the body for example calcium, vitamin C, vitamin A, iron and so on and so forth. However, there are people who lack one or two of these nutrients thus they have a weak immune system.

They say it is not easy to get the nutrients in the foods that they are eating because most of them are processed. Today on Broque254 nutrition, I have with me a nutrition enthusiast:

Me: hello?

Time: hi, I’m Time Karimi, a nutrition enthusiast.

Me: by nutrition enthusiast, what do you mean? Are you trained or it is just something you have for nutrition?

Time: it is just something that came about in my mind. I thought of being a nutritionist.

Me: I have a few questions for you today. What is your ideal meal with all the nutrients that you need?

Time: an ideal meal with all the nutrients …I think it should have a balanced diet meal that consists of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and most of all fruits should be there.

Me: second question, for someone suffering from anaemia, what meals would you suggest they eat?

Time: you should eat a lot of leafy greens, such as kales, spinach and …yea…even in anaemia you are not supposed to forget fruits.

Me: what fruits should they focus on?

Time: watermelon to bring a lot of water in the body. You see anaemia is lack of blood and uhm… blood consists of water. So I think you should eat a lot of watermelon and beetroots too.

Me: what is your ideal healthy, nutritious and economical drink?

Time: I take the mixed fruit drink or smoothy. You can even decide to mix your cabbage your kales then your carrots and beetroot you mix then you drink.

Me: most people think living healthy is expensive. Is that true?

Time: I don’t think living healthy is expensive because there are those mama mbogas out there …you can go and buy your kales, spinach…then you mix and cook.

Me: living healthy is not as expensive as some people think.

Time: yea…it is not that expensive.  It is cheap. You can even live healthy with your thirty shillings.

Me: thank you so much, we are so glad to have had you today.

There you have it; you can get all the food with all the nutrients you need at your kitchen garden or closest grocery shop. For nutrition on Broque254, I’m Vera Alberta.

a bottle of clean drinking water

The other day my cousin Anney visited us and her glowing and radiant skin captivated me. I asked her what she does and she said “I take a lot of water.” Water? I also take water, the recommended 12 glasses a day but my skin didn’t look anything like hers! Three days later, I realise I have been doing it all wrong. There are times that are best to drink water.

Anney drinks a glass of water immediately she wakes up (after praying, of course). She says it is better to drink water on an empty stomach at that time of the morning as it gets your brain and body out of the sleeping mode.It acts as a detox and cleanses the body. She doesn’t ingest any other thing until after 30 minutes.

She drinks water before any meal. This prepares the intestines for the meal and also helps reduce over eating as it already fills the stomach.

Before working out, Anney takes a glass of water. It helps to replace the fluids that’ll be lost through sweating leaving her hydrated through the workout. She also drinks a glass before taking a bath to lower blood pressure. Like a ritual, she drinks a glass before bedtime advising me to do so too, as it reduces risk of cardiovascular or heart related diseases.

Drink water at whichever time you want, but consider these times more as it is more beneficial and healthier.

Broque and on Vacation

By MARY NJERI

Did you know that with 6500 Kenyan shillings one can travel to Watamu Island for a vacation with your friends? At first I thought this was ridiculous but after a practical experience, I realized how possible it is. When travelling on a budget, one thing you should keep on mind is that you will forgo one or two of the luxuries.  For instance in my case, instead of flying to Mombasa, I used a bus, meaning that I cut the cost of transport. It might have taken me more time to get there, but I still got to the destination. The other important thing when travelling on a budget is that share costing will save you some coins. Therefore for accommodation and food, looks for means to share the cost. Thus, for one to go on vacation with a tight budget, going with people helps. The podcast below gives a detailed account of how I spent 6500 Kenyan shillings on my trip to Watamu. You can try the same and with no doubt you will enjoy yourself.

Tips on Solo Travel

By Mary Njeri

Travelling is an important part of everyone’s life. However, there are times when the people around you do not share the same travelling bucket list. This means that you do not have a crowd to explore the world with. In such a case, solo trips come in handy. From the mention of it, one might get scared and thing about how going into a completely different country alone is out of this world. Nevertheless, many people have done and most say t is the most therapeutic and peaceful thing in the world. I asked one Sharon Mwangi on how she managed to go on solo trip and tips she could give someone who hopes to do the same. To her, all that matters is being within the budget and overcoming the fear since it is not that bad. Therefore if you are there wondering how it would feel going out there alone, it is high time you try, trust me, you will get addicted and the idea of carrying someone else in your trips will never come again.

The elite Kenya

By Mary Njeri

When people say Kenya is beautiful, the thought that comes to most people’s minds is the coastal beaches and at times nature and wildlife. For the middle class citizen, that is what beauty is. However, for the rich and probably tourists from other countries, Kenya is one of the most beautiful countries because they can afford it. Some of the areas that are deemed most beautiful like Samburu are the least favorite for most citizens because of the belief that dry areas are less beautiful.  This therefore brings forward the belief that the local tourist sites and the beautiful places in Kenya, do not target local s and are thus overpriced. However for someone like me and you, who hopefully want to be rich and unlock the high class lifestyle where one pays almost a million per night in  a hotel, there are a variety of places a person can visit. One such location is the Banana Conservancy that charges 1.2 million a night, and one is required to stay for at least three nights. Thus the thought that there are people who can afford it, only challenges us to expand our travel bucket list.
